An interactive book telling the story of the first uses of oil since Antiquity.
Nokinomo designed this narrative installation in the form of an open book. The content is projected onto sculptural furniture that becomes a living, interactive surface. Visitors explore the book through gesture: by brushing the set as if turning the pages, they reveal the scenes and animated illustrations created by La Méduse. Each page opened is accompanied by a projection on the opposite wall.
In First Uses, a display case and this digital book present archive documents from the world's greatest libraries. They tell the story of the earliest uses of bitumen and oil, since the dawn of time.
From the Latin petra oleum (rock oil), petroleum is a natural liquid of varied colours that has been used for many purposes since Antiquity: a source of energy for the Babylonians, who burned it in their lamps, a medicine for the Romans, an ingredient in mummy embalming in ancient Egypt, caulking for boats, and even Greek fire for waging war…
