The installation "We Are Oil" greets visitors at the entrance to the Doubt section of the permanent exhibition at the Black Gold Museum in Riyad, Saudi Arabia.
The installation unfolds on two levels. On the back wall, crude oil flows continuously, slow, heavy, and viscous, with all the physical density that characterizes this substance. Approximately 1.5 meters in front of this wall, a transparent tulle creates a second projection plane, suspended between the visitor and the flow.
When the visitor stands facing the installation, their presence is captured by two depth cameras. Their silhouette then appears simultaneously on both planes: emerging and viscous in the oil spill on the back wall, and on the tulle nearby, enveloped in iridescent, multifaceted colors. As they move along the installation, they see themselves doubly inscribed within the material. They are oil: this is the literal meaning of the installation's title.
The superimposition of the two projection planes creates a striking depth effect: the visitor naturally perceives the planes sliding relative to one another as they move, reinforcing the illusion of physical immersion in the substance. A generative and immersive soundtrack accompanies the flow, strengthening the sensation of the material's physical presence.
